Trouble having a chat

December 10, 2008

No, I don’t have trouble chatting, but Trouble the cat is really talking like a pro. Remember when I posted a video of Nippon respondingto my inane questions? It turns out that Trouble does the same thing. Trouble’s owner was kind enough to let me know via YouTube. Come on people, let’s set up a talking cat network!

Glory! After the jump, bonus Nippon picture.

Nippon has a drinking problem

October 4, 2008

As I told you months ago, Nippon has a nasty little habit. She drinks from my water, and since I’m not always around when she does, more than once I have been unpleasantly surprised with a mouthful of cat hair. Don’t believe me? Check this out!

Nippon smells the roses

May 23, 2008

As I told you earlier, Nippon has had quite a career as a flower smeller. That is to say, she spent an afternoon being mesmerised by a bouquet. I made countless pictures, and I am glad I did, since Nippon treated me to her many, many facial expressions. So here we go!

The first presentation of the flowers:

What the hell are those!
Intrigued cat is…intrigued

At first, she seemed to be more interested in the wrapping plastic and ribbon:

“I love ribbons! Sounds kind of like Nippon!”

But then it was time for flower inspection:

lickytongue

After that, she first seemed very dissapointed with the whole flower arrangement (omg).

Nippon answers questions

May 17, 2008

Shu’s cat Pearl sent Nippon this meme for her to answer. Since it’s a cat-to-cat business, Nippon has decided to reply. I think if I would have asked her she would have refused. Here we go!

1. What I was doing 10 years ago.
I was living as a pet for a king of some sort in my fourth life, getting all the fish and attention I so deserved, and still do.

2. 5 things on my to-do list for today.
Lying under the bed, sitting directly in front of my owners face and giving him all my devoted attention whilst he is trying to work, chewing on air, looking expectantly and beg for food and walking away disinterested when I get it, sneaking back and eating the food anyway.

3. Snacks I enjoy.
Special cat milk, sardines and mackerel. Also anything people leave out of the fridge and that I’m really not supposed to eat. Not them yeast treats though, what are people thinking with those…

4. Things I would do if I were a billionaire.
Pretty much the same, but with more sardines.

5. Three of my bad habits.
Being very unpredictable and lashing out all of a sudden, asking for attention when people are trying to work, shedding insane amounts of hair around the house. No really, I know all cats do it, but I’m the queen of shedding.

6. Five places I’ve lived.
A kitty castle in my fourth life (see question 1), on the third and fourth flour of the same building in Amsterdam. I will be living in a sardine factory in life six and with a catnip developer extraordinaire in number seven.

7. Five jobs I’ve had.
Furniture destroyer, pro fur shedder, air chewer, exotic dancer, flower smeller (more on that later!).

I’m supposed to tag five other cats with this meme, but I only know the kitties over at Bitchypoo. I’m a bit of an einzelgänger if you will, and only communicate with humans. I’ll give it a shot though!

Ok Nippon, thanks for that. Of course, this post would not be complete without some Nippon pics. I won’t let you down. Here is a shot I made of her when I was on the top floor of the building Nippon lives in.

Whazzup

And now, the same picture, but zoomed in and with a 90 degree twist.

Whaddaya want hooman?

I think this caption suits it very well indeed:

tnx Jezebel

That’s all from Nippon right now. More about her mysterious flower smelling later this week!

Nippon dances, high-res

April 25, 2008

As I promised in my last post, I will brighten your day with a picture of Nippon that is best appreciated in a higher resolution than I usually use. But before that, Nippon will perform an ancient, sacred kitty cat dance:

I'm a cat
“And-a-one”

I'm a kitty cat
“Poot your left foot in”

“Ok, I’m kind of done now”

Nippon speaks

March 3, 2008

I’ll be on holiday with my boyfriend for the next 10 days. I’m going to Wales, and I’m very excited! The nature is supposed to be great and it’s so nice and quiet, and therefore unlike Amsterdam. Maybe I’ll even see the three cats from the Ginger cat tales, since they live in the area where I’m going

Well, to make up for the lack of cat posting, like I promised earlier, here is a video of Nippon talking to me. Yes, I know that a touch of anthropomorphism, just let me. Unless anyone knows other cats that chew air when you talk to them and why. Until that time I’ll just believe she’s saying things to me, like ‘shut up, I’m trying to relax here’ or ‘fetch me some food lesser lifeform’. She is the best.

Nippon the Great

March 2, 2008

Remember Nippon? The cat that lives in the office I work at right now? She’s awesome. Sometimes sweet, mostly old and cranky looking, and very peculiar. She can’t help herself but come to you and cuddle up to you when you whistle, and she pretends to be eating when you talk to her. Also, her owner can pick her up and spin her around, hold her upside down and she just lets him. I think I would have to say my final words when I would try it, but it’s hilarious when he does it.

Pictures after the jump!

A year in numbers

January 29, 2008

Yes! I never thought I would do it, but Cats ‘n stuff has now officially been in existence for one year. The posts are still fun to write and the cats keep coming, so another year shouldn’t be a problem.

So, what exactly happened with this blog the past year? Have people actually read it, apart from friends and family that are so kind to check in every now and then? Why, yes, some people actually do! My favourite moment was when someone actually emailed me to say that she recognized her cat on my blog. I would love for that to happen more often, but once a year is already pretty cool.

I would not be me if there weren’t some facts and numbers to review the past year, so if you have the attention span of a three year old: there are some pictures on the bottom of this post. One even moves!

First of all, how many visitors did I get? From January 29, 2007 to now, exactly a year later, WordPress has counted 10.650 visitors in total, an average of 29 visitors a day.

jij snuibeltje

Are they unique? Probably not. Do friends and family account for most of these views. Why sure, but I’m still pretty proud! These numbers weren’t spread out evenly throughout the year though. When I count by month (excluding January 2007), the stat count looks like this:

February 2007: 172
March 2007: 303
April 2007: 247
May 2007: 319
June 2007: 115
July 2007: 927
August 2007: 1667
September 2007: 1341
October 2007: 773
November 2007: 1827
December 2007: 1596
January 2008: 1354

See that spike in July? That is the month the first Invisible stuff ‘n cats post really took off. That post attracted the most surfers and lurkers, 2763 in total. Strangely enough, all the other five posts in the Invisible series have not even gotten that number of visitors combined. So the prize for top post goes to the first Invisible stuff ‘n cats post. So nice to know that probably a third of the views this blog gets comes material I didn’t even make up myself. It challenges ones creativity.

So how many posts did I make in total, and what is the average? Well, the number of posts I made in a year (including this one) is:

January 2007: 2
February 2007: 12
March 2007: 5
April 2007: 5
May 2007: 6
June 2007: 3
July 2007: 9
August 2007: 9
September 2007: 8
October 2007: 5
November 2007: 3
December 2007: 2
January 2008: 4

That’s an average of 6 posts a month, but my oh my, I crashed at the end of 2007. I hope to be a bit more consistent this year. Hey, at least the start of 2008 wasn’t bad.

Well, those are the cold hard facts. I would really like to do a sort of top ten list, but I’m too tired to bother at the moment. I’m just going to post some pictures that I really like and maybe do a top something later on. My favs are:

De schaamte voorbij

Supernegeerder

Dealing with lesser lifeforms comes with the territory

That’s that for now, I’ll close this official first year with an animated GIF. What sums the glorious nature of the internet better than a poorly constructed “film”. Enjoy! Onto the next year!

Yawning in four easy steps

January 27, 2008

I’m proud to present: Nippon. She is a cat from a friend of mine, and will probably be featuring on Cats ‘n stuff more than once. She’s very photogenic, and I think the next series of pictures of a step-by-step yawning guide by Nippon  prove this very well.

Saliva's coming up...
Step one: look interested and attentively above you. You really don’t want to have anyone catch you yawning, so they can make pictures that in turn will be posted on the internet. This strategy might persuade the person with the camera to look in the same direction you’re looking.

Woozy
Step two: you can’t contain yourself any longer. You must yawn. Make it look like you’re singing and retain at least some of your dignity.

Too late dude
Step three: face it, you lost. Well, in that case just go all out and make it look like your head is about to split. RAWWRRR!

D
Step four: since your dignity has been lost (see step three) just go with the flow and make an UNBELIEVABLY weird face. Congrats Nippon, it’s a classic.
