About as old as Moef

January 29, 2010

Yaaaay! Cats ‘n Stuff is three years old today. And it’s also the day on which I met Moef for the first time. And she is about three and a half years old. Yes, a bit of a stretch, but there’s the connection for you.

And like Moef, Cats ‘n Stuff has her dark moments…

….a habit of ignoring annoying people…

…and a tendency to not back down from an intense staring contest.

But only I have, and will continue to make the greatest art form in the world: the animated GIF.

A happy and naggy 2010

January 3, 2010

It’s the third day of the new year, and it’s slowly dawning on me that we live in 2010. What a weird feeling. Feels all fresh, starting anew in a year that ends with a zero. And on the other hand it’s of course totally meaningless and just a sense of time that we bestow on it. Anyway, before we get all nihilistic, let me wish you all a very happy new year. May it be filled with nice people and good food.

Rummaging through my cat picture archive I found some nice ones of Roefes. Time to digitally dust those off! In these pictures he’s ignoring me, nagging and sunbathing. In other words: the usual.

Food coma

December 27, 2009

Cats ‘n stuff is in a wonderful, delirious food coma. Not that I’ve eaten that much during Christmas, but it’s plenty to induce a state of catatonia. So no long post, but an animated gif that represents my current state of being.

Thanks for the pics Fedor!

Fluid taxonomy – Cattitude edition

December 4, 2009

As some of you may know, I am a total archive geek. Therefore, I love organising and pondering taxonomies and other information structures. So much so, that I am dedicating an entire post to a minute change in my categorising system. There’ll be a real cat post tomorrow that sparked this change, so bear with me.

Two years ago I wrote a post called ‘The ‘ears backward’ move”, in which I stated one can determine the level of annoyance in a cat by the degree in which his or her ears are pointing backward. This is closely related cats ignoring people, another cat trait to which I dedicated a special category. While writing my new post (yes, it’s coming), I noticed I did not have a special ‘ears backward move’ category yet. I know, incredible right?!

So, from now on, both classifications can be found in a brand new parent category ‘Cattitude’. I immediately concede that ignoring is often found in tandem with the ears backward move, but it’s my blog and my taxonomy, so I will change it up and be as illogical as I please. Next up: a REALLY annoyed cat. Yay!

Sirocco gets frisky

October 5, 2009

Kakapo are an endangered bird native to New Zealand. There are under 130 of them left, and well and truly deserve to be as heavily protected as they are. The reason that they are awesome is because they are sluggish, trusting and adorable. They are also known as owl parrots, which is of course an honorary term. I would love to be known as an owl human!

Anyway, there is one kakapo that was hand-reared due to medical issues when he was young, and now thinks he’s human. His name is Sirocco, and he was featured on the great BBC 2 series ‘Last Chance to See’ with the incomparable Stephen Fry and zoologist Mark Carwardine. Sirocco took a more than healthy interest in said zoologist, and as a result, I almost ruptured an artery laughing:

The fun well and truly starts at 1:04, but I do recommend watching the whole video. If you’re busy, well, here is an animated gif of Sirocco’s ecstatic face. Never forget:

Festival cat

September 17, 2009

Recently I went to a lovely, cosy festival on the Dutch West Frisian Island of Vlieland called Into the Great Wide Open. Great atmosphere, great food, great group of friends and really great music. To my surprise, I even saw a cat that did not mind to get some cuddles and love from a smelly festival-goer. That would be me. Smelly. How did I accomplish this? Well…

Sneaking up:

Being spotted:

Purposely ignored:

Grudgingly acknowledged after petting:

Back for more cuddles:

In short: the usual approach to cat behaviour in five easy steps!

Billie is so GIF-able

August 15, 2009

I have often professed my love for animated GIFs on this blog, and recently I got to thinking about just why I find them so adorable and amazing. The thing is that they are short and sweet and have no sound, so the focus is purely on the visuals. Often, you do know the sound that goes with the visuals, or it’s just a classic case of awesomeness, encapsulated in grainy imagery.

Case in point:

Also GIFs can help you make yourself loved on internet fora, or even prove certain points. Bottom line is, lumping together a series of pictures to create something funny and / or creative seems deceptively simple. But as always, the simplest ideas or technologies feed creativity IMHO.

Par example, a GIF that was made after the Bush shoe throwing incident:

More where that came from here.

Anyway, this frazzled and somewhat random analysis of why GIFs kick ass is all in honour of my latest creation. Curious?

The scary cat

June 27, 2009

Most cats are awesome, even if they are mean and grumpy. That’s just business as usual, and that’s fine. But some, just some cats, are not nice and even downright scary. No, not scaredy cats, plain scary creepy, gnarly bastards. To wit:

Ok, this is not very bad yet, but don’t overlook that evil grin.

Yes, the true colours are beginning to show. The cocked ear, an evil glint in the eyes and last but certainly not least, the mouth. This really gives away his inner feelings: humans must suffer.

The next picture is not for the faint of heart:

Totally random

June 25, 2009

I have left you in the dark for so long, and what do you get? Random pictures. Hey, life is not fair, and sometimes I feel more like posting stuff than cats. The good news is I finally got out of my house after a month of thesis writing and a hermit-like lifestyle and got to take some nice kitty pictures. They will follow later.

Summer has arrived in The Netherlands, and with it came an impressive thunderstorm that kept me up all night a few weeks ago. It was as if a civil war had broken out and actual cannons were fired next to my window. In the dead of night, Amsterdam was lit.

Also, as I was trying to take a picture of an actual lighting bolt I gained a new-found respect for photographers. I must have snapped at least 50+ pictures, and all I got was this:

Play him off, keyboard cat

May 16, 2009

I love me a good FAIL video as much as the next person. And I love cats. So the new meme “Play him off, keyboard cat” is something that combines two of my favourite elements: FAILs and cats!

Most of the videos out there that have incorporated keyboard cat (rest his soul) are real classic FAILs, such as:

Glory! And some are unexpected, such as this socially very interesting video of a child telling his parents he has become an atheist:

Thanks internet!
