Queensday composition

May 13, 2009

Queensday here in The Netherlands was very dramatic this year, since a man ran into the crowd that was cheering on the royal family and killed seven people. It took a while to process what happened, and to actually post this picture that I love. I took it on Queensday, and it was one of those surreal compositions you cannot think of yourself, except maybe after consuming copious amounts of alcohol or drugs.

The headlessness, the humping of the computer screen, the leaves, the bikes turning their backs to the scene… I love it! What I loved even more is that I saw someone walking around with this puppet in her hands hours after I took the picture, truly happy with finding it abandoned on the streets. The screen must be so lonely now though…

The definition of Spring

April 17, 2009

Spring has arrived in The Netherlands! The sun has been shining for over a week, and when the first ray hit the city, the whole of Amsterdam poored out, got into their boats, sat on benches and picknicked and generally got around 165 % friendlier. Sure, today will probably one of those rainy days, but the last week was fabulous.

On all my biking trips I did with this glorious weather, I saw lambs. Now, nothing means Spring to me if not a whole flock of lambs being totally adorable and running around. Another Sping must is people playing football in the streets and in the parks here. Well, what happens if you give lambs a football? This!

Disclaimer: cuteness may cause severe redardation in speech, such as ZOMG!1!!!1 *squeeeeeel* THAT’S ADORABLE, AWWWW *head explosion*

Thanks Tom!

I Love to Hate You

February 20, 2009

No, not you my lovely reader(s), you are all pretty and divine. But sometimes, when you are angry at something or someone you just want to lash out. But I think the best strategy is to find love within you and erase the hate. But while you’re working on that (because we’re not all Dalai Lama-esque), I suggest to love the hate! And you know who does that best? Boone! My new crush object in the kitty world.

Boone is Julie’s cat, who came up with the brilliant Kitty Wigs. And also the wonderful kits from Subversive Cross Stitch. Really, get some, I’m thinking of treating myself to this gem:

It’s good hate sometimes, beeyatch! And to prove that some mental aggression can be fantastically funny, I present to you, Boone, after the jump.

Cats in the Met

February 17, 2009

When I was in New York a few weeks ago, I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a great museum, worthy of spending many more hours than the four I gave it. And cats were everywhere, truly an inspiration for artists of all ages. I just thought I’d share some with you.

Musical update

October 6, 2008

It’s been a while since I wrote about what music I’m listening to at the moment. And since it is such an important part of my life, I should do that more often. When I wake up, the first thing I do is turn on music, I listen to it while riding my bike, and before I go to sleep. Please let me know what you like, maybe I’ll find some inspiration!

Johnny Cash
I mentioned that I like him a lot before I think, but not to confuse people: I LOVE JOHNNY CASH. My two favourite songs by him are miles apart:

   A Boy Named Sue

The line: “You are someone else / I am still right here” always gets me…

I also love Anouk a lot, her music fills me with energy:

   Good God

Cool animals – Amazon horned frog

August 19, 2008

Every once in a while, I will post a quite random picture of an animal that is not a cat (I know, the shock!), just because they are cool. Sometimes, I will write something about it, explain why it’s cool in my humble opinion. I will not do that today however, this picture speaks for itself.

Original picture and National Geographic entry here.

He’s like the original Hypnotoad:

All hail to the Hypnotoad

Mike Rowe sells useless cat toy

May 21, 2008

One of my favourite programs ever is Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. It’s entertaining, and Mike Rowe is hilarious, intelligent and not bad to look at. I chanced upon the video below, that contains very old footage of Mike trying to sell crap on home shopping network QVC. He got fired from the job multiple times because of his lackluster presentation and obvious disdain for the products he was selling. Watch him as he tries to sell something that your groceries come in as a cat toy for the low low price of $ 36,50!

The cat is loving it though!

Nippon dances, high-res

April 25, 2008

As I promised in my last post, I will brighten your day with a picture of Nippon that is best appreciated in a higher resolution than I usually use. But before that, Nippon will perform an ancient, sacred kitty cat dance:

I'm a cat

I'm a kitty cat
“Poot your left foot in”

“Ok, I’m kind of done now”

LOLgraphs, thanks ICHC!

April 6, 2008

Ok, so a dream has come true. My love of stats is obvious by now, and the lovely people of I Can Has Cheezburger like them too! They launched a site called GraphJam: Pop culture for people in cubicles. Now, I don’t work in a cubicle, but the knowledge that there are people who love kittehs and stats and who have humour makes my day.

Par example:

A year in numbers

January 29, 2008

Yes! I never thought I would do it, but Cats ‘n stuff has now officially been in existence for one year. The posts are still fun to write and the cats keep coming, so another year shouldn’t be a problem.

So, what exactly happened with this blog the past year? Have people actually read it, apart from friends and family that are so kind to check in every now and then? Why, yes, some people actually do! My favourite moment was when someone actually emailed me to say that she recognized her cat on my blog. I would love for that to happen more often, but once a year is already pretty cool.

I would not be me if there weren’t some facts and numbers to review the past year, so if you have the attention span of a three year old: there are some pictures on the bottom of this post. One even moves!

First of all, how many visitors did I get? From January 29, 2007 to now, exactly a year later, WordPress has counted 10.650 visitors in total, an average of 29 visitors a day.

Are they unique? Probably not. Do friends and family account for most of these views. Why sure, but I’m still pretty proud! These numbers weren’t spread out evenly throughout the year though. When I count by month (excluding January 2007), the stat count looks like this:

February 2007: 172
March 2007: 303
April 2007: 247
May 2007: 319
June 2007: 115
July 2007: 927
August 2007: 1667
September 2007: 1341
October 2007: 773
November 2007: 1827
December 2007: 1596
January 2008: 1354

See that spike in July? That is the month the first Invisible stuff ‘n cats post really took off. That post attracted the most surfers and lurkers, 2763 in total. Strangely enough, all the other five posts in the Invisible series have not even gotten that number of visitors combined. So the prize for top post goes to the first Invisible stuff ‘n cats post. So nice to know that probably a third of the views this blog gets comes material I didn’t even make up myself. It challenges ones creativity.

So how many posts did I make in total, and what is the average? Well, the number of posts I made in a year (including this one) is:

January 2007: 2
February 2007: 12
March 2007: 5
April 2007: 5
May 2007: 6
June 2007: 3
July 2007: 9
August 2007: 9
September 2007: 8
October 2007: 5
November 2007: 3
December 2007: 2
January 2008: 4

That’s an average of 6 posts a month, but my oh my, I crashed at the end of 2007. I hope to be a bit more consistent this year. Hey, at least the start of 2008 wasn’t bad.

Well, those are the cold hard facts. I would really like to do a sort of top ten list, but I’m too tired to bother at the moment. I’m just going to post some pictures that I really like and maybe do a top something later on. My favs are:

De schaamte voorbij

Dealing with lesser lifeforms comes with the territory

That’s that for now, I’ll close this official first year with an animated GIF. What sums the glorious nature of the internet better than a poorly constructed “film”. Enjoy! Onto the next year!
